This semester, I am so thrilled to spend more time in the classroom and build relationships with school faculty, students, and the St. Peter community. Over the past couple of years, I have had various experiences being in schools—with working as a substitute paraprofessional, volunteering, and having various field experiences at both elementary and high school levels. Both of my parents are teachers in Jordan, MN—my mom teaches second grade and my dad teaches high school Chemistry and Physics—and because of them, I have found a passion for learning and delved into the importance of equality in education. Outside of school environments, I have a lot of experience working with children. For three summers, I have been a nanny for different families around my neighborhood in Jordan. In the summer of 2016, I traveled to Madrid, Spain, to be an au pair for two months and was not only a language tutor for the family but also a cultural bridge. While abroad, I became aware of what defined my home and made my Midwestern culture unique to my family’s Spanish one. This past summer I worked at Green Lake Bible Camp in Spicer, MN, with middle and high school aged children. Kiddos are the most important part of this profession, and getting to have a role in their lives is truly a blessing. As a future educator, I hope to encourage my students to find their voices and have the courage to speak their beliefs and opinions, even when sharing in their nonnative languages . I would love to teach in an immersion school someday and hopefully teach English abroad in Peru for a year after I graduate from MNSU.
