Spanish Club
Soy la presidenta del club
At the beginning of my second year, I was elected to be Vice President of the Spanish Club; in spring semester, I became President. Over the course of the two semesters, I coordinated events with the executive board, club members, as well as our mentors, Elizabeth Harsma and Luis Yanez. I planned events such as an campus scavenger hunt, piñata making, salsa dancing night, soccer game with other language clubs. In February 2016, we took a group to the Minnesota Zoo to Spanish day to judge student presentations from different schools. In April 2017, Spanish Club took a field trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Art to see an exhibition by the Mexican film director Guillermo del Toro. Many students have seen his films El laberinto del fauno and La espina del diablo. As this is my fifth semester of being president, I have seen club change through the times. We have a new advisor, Alfredo Duplat, and have changed our graduate advisor three times in the last year and a half. Throughout all of this change, many new ideas have come to club, and I have found it exciting to work with these new activities and ideas.
Throughout two years collaborating with other executive board members, I have learned how to delegate tasks in order to give other people responsibilities and become more involved in the club. One of my weaknesses before was asking people for help when planning, but this allowed me to break out of that weakness and connect with more people. This semester especially I have thought about giving up my position to give the opportunity to someone else. However, each semester there has been a new turnover and the only people who have remained have been on the executive board. Therefore, this semester we need to work on maintaining a group of people who will stay in club for next semester and have those people take up responsibility and feel truly apart of the group and stick with it.
